Welcome to the Comma blog. This is where we'll write about journaling, privacy,
and the small design decisions that go into a writing space you can actually trust.
Why Comma exists
Most journaling apps ask you to trade privacy for convenience. Your entries sync
to a server you don't control, encrypted with keys they hold. Comma takes a
different stance:
- End-to-end encryption. Your entries are encrypted on your device before they
ever leave it. The master key is wrapped by a key derived from your passphrase —
not your login. We can't read your words, and neither can anyone who gets the
database. - Self-hostable. Comma is a single application you can run on your own server,
with your own database. No third-party services required. - Free. No subscription, no credit card. Sign up, set a passphrase, and write.
What you'll find here
Expect short, practical posts: how to build a journaling habit that survives a busy
week, how end-to-end encryption actually works under the hood, and notes on what
we're shipping next.
The unexamined life is not worth living. — Socrates
